How to use it? The phone brings us suddenly, without prior notice to the caller's home or office, and such an intrusion requires some caution, so that it does not seem too intrusive. Actually, not many people can make calls, although many do so several times a day.

What time is it appropriate to call? In private matters, it is not appropriate to make phone calls before nine or after ten, unless we know, that the interlocutor comes home late or that he leaves for work early. Particular caution should be exercised in the case of the elderly (we refrain from calling them too much in the morning, late in the evening, and also during the after-lunch siesta). Let's also respect mealtimes, and if possible – TV news and popular movies. Let us not allow, for the phone to ring too long.

Introducing yourself. Person, who is calling, should provide a first and last name, as soon as someone picks up the phone: "Good morning, says Michał Kowalski, have I found (could I speak…) Mr. Malinowski?”However, it is not appropriate to start with a question: "Who says?”, Who's on the phone?”, "Who am I talking to?”

Talk succinctly. Only in exceptional circumstances can the telephone replace a visit. Anyway, it's always better to be sure, are we not disturbing. "Good morning, says Michał Kowalski, I'm not disturbing?”, or "Dear Mary, say, if I interrupted you, I can call you later?”, and if we did not find the person, which we call, we can ask: "What time could I call, so as not to disturb him?”. We are only allowed to ask exceptionally, for your friend to call you back when you return – after all, we care about contacting him. Also then, when a call is suddenly interrupted for technical reasons, the person calls again, who did it first.

Our interlocutor also has some responsibilities – if he can't come to the phone, should apologize. He may resort to an innocent lie or simply tell the truth: “I'm busy right now (I have a guest). When can I call you back?"If he is not alone and cannot talk freely, it should make it known to the person, which is calling. After all, not always and not everything we want or can talk about in the presence of third parties.

Hosting with friends, let's ask their permission to use the phone and try to limit the time spent on the phone. Let's not call the other side of the world, unless they agree to accept payment for the call from us (then we must know, how long did the conversation last).

Voice mail. It is an excellent device, but only then, when properly used! Registers

phones, which we couldn't pick up, but let's remember, to contact people, who left a message. After all, nothing upsets you more, than the incessant voice on the tape. Then the "secretary" becomes a blockade preventing contact with the owner of the telephone.

The owner of the answering machine should choose the simple one

and a concise formula, resigning from playful and fancy recording texts, these may seem inappropriate: "Good morning. Here's the number… Please leave a message after hearing the beep. I will call you back after I return ", or: "Good morning. Anna and Michał Kowalski's apartment here. We are not at home at the moment, please leave a message after hearing the beep, and we will contact you as soon as possible. Thank you ". Leaving a message, let's try to be clear and concise: "This is Anna Michalska. I wish, to come over for dinner with me 3 brand. I'll call you around nine today. If I couldn't find you, be so kind and contact me. I kiss."

If the answering machine is on, despite our presence at home, let us not suddenly change our minds, when the interlocutor introduces himself. Knowing, that we "choose" the interlocutors, may feel uncomfortable and doubt our truthfulness.

Publicizing the conversation and "sharing" it with other people present is possible only with mutual consent – never do this without the interlocutor knowing.

Business phone. By contacting the secretariat, we give the name and purpose of the phone. The secretary will connect us with the interlocutor or inform us, when we can contact him. It is not appropriate to force the caller to wait a long time, when we said: "Please wait", "I connect", etc.. Better to let you know:

“The director is just having a conversation, please wait a moment or call us in ten minutes ". Complicated, problems that require time are better presented in writing, before sending the letter with a short telephone conversation: “I would like to know your opinion on this. When can I call, so as not to disturb you?”
